Activities in Barre de Navidad
Barra de Navidad, in the state of Jalisco, Mexico is a small fishing village about 60 km from Manzanillo, Mexico, population 3,386. Situated about 25 minutes from the Manzanillo airport, Barra de Navidad - or Barra, as the locals call it - is a vibrant small community with a mostly Mexican population, although there is a healthy "Gringo" community as well. With only about 6000 residents, Barra feels more like a village than a town.ggg
Barra de Navidad attracts a number of regular visitors from the north in search of a quiet beachside atmosphere without the large hotels and hectic activity of the larger Mexican beach resorts.
Barra has all the amenities needed to make your vacation a delight, without the large hotels, thumping discos and racing traffic of nearby Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan. Dozens of restaurants line the main street through town, and there are shops galore to find your souvenirs and a cerveza or the makings for margaritas back at the Casa.
Grocery stores are small but well stocked and if you can't find what you want, simply ask the proprietor and he will steer to to the nearest store with what you need.
There are ATM machines, post office, internet cafes, bakeries, butchers, two medical clinics and even a water park for the kids. There are enough restaurants, cafes, bars and taco stands in Barra that can eat in a different establishment every day for your vacation and never eat in the same place twice.
Stroll the beaches, walk the town or watch the sunset from the Malecon. Enjoy the weekly open air market, go for a swim, relax on the beach, or take a siesta. Go shopping, take a tour or grab a cab or a bus to one of the many nearby local towns, some of which are hundreds of years old.
And for the more adventurous and restless visitors, there's fishing, surfing, golf, mountain bike tours, scuba diving - lessons if you need - and tours galore, whether it's the old colonial towns, volcano tours, eco tours, or a local coffee plantation, there's a lot to do around here if you have the desire.
Or you can just relax. Wander the town, chat with the locals, and before long, you will learn that "manana" doesn't just mean tomorrow, it means, "later, maybe, but just not right now." And that's what a real Mexican vacation is all about!
